THE BAUHAUS BOOKS 1925–1930
The book series was an ambitious project by Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy, which began in December 1923 with a provisional programme of 30 topics on social problems. In 1925, the first eight titles (with a focus on art) were published and a further 31 Bauhaus books were planned for the future. A total of 14 volumes remained, the last book (by Moholy-Nagy) was launched in 1930.

The increase in the Bauhaus part of the book programme can be read as a strategy against the growing political pressure felt in Weimar. Since the founding of the school, director Gropius had been involved in public relations work to counter criticism and attacks. Nor is the intention to present the results of the school in the context of international avant-garde free from the need to improve the school's image and support its uncertain position in solidarity. With the Bauhaus-owned publishing house finally in 1923, it seemed easier to do this, whenever necessary, in the Bauhaus-typical form.
The Bauhaus publishing house went bankrupt in 1925, and Albert Langen (the founder of »Simplicissimus«) took over the publication of the books as a new business partner.
